The title phrase “Agerwa Wedia Mado” (Her land is over there) employs the feminine possessive (-wa) to personify Ethiopia as both lover and mother, while the directional ambiguity of “wedia mado” (that distant direction) echoes the Ethiopian Orthodox notion of samienat (heavenly homeland).
