BIOGRAPHY
Haile Roots, born Hailemichael Getnet on September 25, 1982, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is a prominent artist known for blending Ethiopian musical traditions with reggae. He grew up in the vibrant capital, where he pursued his early education at Selassie Cathedral School and later attended Minilik II Secondary School. Although his initial interests leaned toward painting and soccer, his love for music began to take shape after a life-changing reggae concert in 1993 organized by the legendary DJ Z.
Inspired by the rhythms and messages of reggae, Haile Roots launched his career, gaining recognition with the release of his debut album, Chiggae, in 2011. The 13-track project included standout hits like "Bado Neber," "Chiggae," and "Netsuhe Quanquayen," showcasing his ability to merge reggae's global appeal with Ethiopian influences. Collaborating with celebrated artists such as Teddy Afro and Lucciano further elevated the album, marking it as a defining moment in his journey.
Today, Haile Roots is celebrated as one of Ethiopia’s key reggae ambassadors. His music often carries powerful themes of unity, justice, and societal transformation. In addition to his contributions as a musician, he serves as the CEO of the Ethiopian Music Copyright and Neighboring Rights Organization, actively advocating for the rights of Ethiopian artists. By innovatively intertwining reggae with local sounds, Haile Roots continues to shape the musical landscape in Ethiopia and beyond.
