Tamrat Desta was born in 1978 in Tiqur Wuha near Shashamane, Ethiopia. He was the second of three brothers. After living in Tiqur Wuha, his family moved to Shashamane and later to Hawassa, where he completed high school. In 1998, he relocated to Dire Dawa to live with his guardian, marking the start of his singing career.

In 1999, Tamrat moved to Addis Ababa to pursue music. His debut album Anleyaym (2004) showcased lyrics primarily by Habtamu Bogale, with six melodies composed by Tamrat himself. His second album, Kanchi Aybeltm (2008), solidified his success, followed by Keza Sefer in 2014. Alongside releasing his own work, Tamrat composed melodies for numerous renowned Ethiopian singers, contributing significantly to the country’s music scene.

On April 18, 2018, Tamrat passed away unexpectedly after visiting a clinic in Addis Ababa for tonsillitis treatment. Allegations of medical negligence surrounded his death. Thousands, including prominent figures, attended his funeral at Holy Trinity Cathedral. Tamrat left behind five children, including Dagmawi Tamrat, who later followed in his footsteps as a singer.
